Physical Education

At Brettenham, we believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a unique and vital contributor to a pupil’s physical development and well-being. A broad and balanced physical education curriculum is intended to provide for pupils with increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations. Progressive learning objectives, combined with sympathetic and varied teaching approaches, provide stimulating, enjoyable, satisfying and appropriately challenging learning experiences for all pupils. The selection of suitably differentiated and logically developed tasks, will help pupils, irrespective of their innate ability, enjoy success and be motivated to further develop their individual potential and take part in lifelong physical activity.

Curriculum

Gymnastics:

In year 1 and 2  children focus on increasing their range of basic gymnastic skills. They create simple sequences between two and goura actions on the floor, e.g. a roll, jump, travel and a balance. They then transfer what they have learnt to the apparatus. The children must be reminded how to lift and carry the apparatus correctly, consolidating the skills they have learnt in Year 1. They will improve the quality of their gymnastic actions, eg stretching fingers and pointing toes, and plan and perform sequences of contrasting actions, with the aim of developing flow and varying speed. They will learn to work positively and cooperatively.

Children in years 3 and 4 create sequences of at least five to six elements that include changes of level and speed and direction and clarity of body shape. They work mostly with a partner or in a small group using matching and mirroring actions, in addition to using in their sequence composition. They show the ability to adapt their movements when working with a partner or in small groups on the floor and when transferred onto apparatus. They develop their understanding of how muscles work, particularly how gymnastics develops strength and suppleness. They will use their knowledge and understanding of what makes a good performance to suggest how work could be improved.

Across year 5 and 6  children create sequences of at least eight to ten elements that include changes of level, direction and pathways to improve the performance of the composition. Their actions are performed with fluency and control even when performing difficult combinations. They work with a partner or in a small group, adapting their performance to perform for an audience. They understand what is important to include in a warm-up for gymnastic activity and know how to improve health and fitness. They are aware of factors influencing the quality of a performance and suggest aspects that need improving using appropriate terminology.

Games:

In EYFS and KS1, the children will develop basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities.

Invasion Games:

In KS2, children will be learning about invasion games. An invasion game is used to describe any game where the objective is to attack the opposition's territory and score a goal or point. They are usually played between teams of equal players and these fast-paced games focus on teamwork, maintaining possession, scoring and defending. Sports personality of the year 2023

Congratulations to all the nominees this year and the winner is.........

Ijaz is a worthy winner. He displays not only the physical qualities we look for but also his thinking. He is able to problem-solve when faced with tactical and compositional problems and shares these ideas with the people he is working with. He does this in such an articulate way that everyone he works with excels in PE.

Not only has he got a brilliant mind, he is socially so gentle, kind and supportive to all the children he works with. He makes them feel at ease, which allows them to take risks when working with him without the worry of making mistakes. This is something that I have seen Ijaz develop over the last couple of years as his confidence in PE has grown.

Lastly, this young man epitomises the word standards, he sets the bar so high for himself in any challenge he faces. This is a trait that will carry him through school and on to great things.

Congratulations Ijaz, you are the 2023 Sports Personality of the year!

They settled down and made some accurate passes down the court resulting in a 5-0 win. Having gained more confidence the girls started quicker in the second match and showed greater awareness and held their positioning. Congratulations girls a fantastic start to the season with two wins, I look forward to hearing how the season progresses.
